Update: Missouri

Three seasons have come and gone since my last post. I have wondered many times if I was ready to hang up the keyboard and find a final resting place for my archives, but deep down I knew the desire to write would surface yet again—and it doesn’t surprise me at all that it happened at three o’clock on a dark, chilly, December morning. Some things don’t change.

I actually began thinking about blogging again when I met a young man who is a good friend of Bren’s from school. He has taught himself web design and I thought it would be neat to have him customize my blog for me. It will be awhile since I’m still working on the design details, but I decided not to wait for the new blog to begin writing again.

To briefly summarize the past eight months:

Bren and I flew down to Missouri at the end of May and spent the summer with my parents (Rick deployed to the Middle East from Alaska at the end of June, and Lord willing, will return there mid-January). We had intended on staying with my folks for a year, but they are zoned for a school that I was not confident in sending Bren to. I researched schools online and found one we were impressed with about 35 miles away. The next day Bren and I drove out to the town where the school is located, rented an apartment, and with my parent’s help, we were moved in two days later. Since our household goods are still in Alaska, we are living with just the basics (much of it borrowed from my parents) feeling very much like best college girlfriends, making do with what we have and having a lot of fun while we’re at it.

Bren’s life grew exponentially once we moved to town. Armed with her driver’s license and a car, she’s constantly on the go. I’ve joked with my parents that if they want to see her they need to make an appointment. It took some adjusting, going from a school of 500 students to one with approximately 1,500, but Bren quickly grew to love the 8-block schedule and wider variety of available classes. She quickly made friends with other drama students, and was relieved to discover that Christianity is far more acceptable here than it was at her school in Alaska. Her life lately consists of volunteer work, studying for end-of-semester finals, learning piano, and getting to know new friends.

...and evidently, Bren still requires to be fed at dinnertime, judging by the when are you going to be finished, I’m starving look in her eyes, peering over the laptop screen as I type. I’m currently reading Playing For Pizza which has put me in the mood for Italian, so ciao!
