Update: Missouri

December 8th, 2008

Three seasons have come and gone since my last post. I have wondered many times if I was ready to hang up the keyboard and find a final resting place for my archives, but deep down I knew the desire to write would surface yet again—and it doesn’t surprise me at all that it happened at three o’clock on a dark, chilly, December morning. Some things don’t change.

I actually began thinking about blogging again when I met a young man who is a good friend of Bren’s from school. He has taught himself web design and I thought it would be neat to have him customize my blog for me. It will be awhile since I’m still working on the design details, but I decided not to wait for the new blog to begin writing again.

Winter Blues

February 7th, 2008

forty-three below

It’s nearly eleven a.m. on this incredibly frigid day in the middle of this incredibly frigid week. I’m sitting on the couch in the living room, feet up on the coffee table (coffee within reach), laptop on my lap. Bad Dog Neezy is sprawled out on the love seat snoring across the room. The Atlantis Space Shuttle launch is being broadcast live on Fox News. My feet are really cold.

I logged on to my blog this morning to a bunch of gobbledygook where my posts should have been. I only panicked a little. Okay, a lot. But the awesome guys at Total Choice Hosting had me back up to snuff about five minutes after I requested help. I hope there’s a special place in heaven for techies.

Gotta go to work now. Toodles.

Winter Is Here

November 11th, 2007

I am back to blogging after my two-month hiatus. I actually greased the blogging wheels on my MySpace blog, just to make sure I wasn’t going to be a one-hit wonder after all. The itch to get back to communicating in cyberspace was real.

Winter has set in here in the Interior, so I thought I’d share some of the sparkling landscape with you. Click on the pics to enlarge.

Lost Post

September 1st, 2007

I just wrote up and lost a long post. Stupid WiFi. Stupid me for not copying. I’m gonna go cry now.

Eh.

July 12th, 2007

Hm. Well, that didn’t work. I moved my pics of Fairbanks to my Alaska blog (gonna try to begin updating there once again), and ended up deleting my whole post – grrrrrr

Off to the side of the entrance to The Mother Ship there are George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton voodoo dolls. “Stick it to him for him sticking it to you!” and “Stick it to her before she sticks it to you!”

Someone is being a little optimistic, eh?

Where Bren volunteers there is a little used bookstore called Forget-Me-Not Books where most books sell for $2.00. Some of the newer and more valuable books sell for more but can be bought cheaper on sale days. Yesterday the books with gold stars and gold dots were 1/2 price, so I was able to pick up Andy Rooney’s book Out Of My Mind for three dollars. I love this guy, and I love his view on writing the way he does. I wish a few more writers (and bloggers for that matter!) thought like this.

The relaxing thing about being a writer is, what you say really doesn’t make a damn bit of difference. People may agree with me or disagree, love me or hate me, but what I say has no effect whatsoever on anyone. What I write about the economy doesn’t effect the economy. What I write about the war, the French, the Yankees, summer vacations, or George W. Bush doesn’t have the slightest effect on the economy, the French, the Yankees, summer vacations, or George W. Bush.

July Tenth

July 10th, 2007

Don’t leave your laptop’s A/C adapter plugged in at B&N Cafe when you leave, because then an employee will find it, put it in a safe place, and then forget where exactly that safe place is, leaving you to wonder So, do I buy a new one or do I not buy a new one? Usually things are lost then found, not the other way around. Grrrrrrr.

While Bren’s at her tutoring job this afternoon I am sitting at B&N by the fire (yes, it’s cool enough in here for a fire :o) using the last of the juice left in the laptop’s battery, trying to catch up on my blog reading and post a bit.

Bren’s boyfriend, Erik, was supposed to leave for Colorado last night so we drove to the airport to bid him farewell. He flies free because his mom is in the flying business, and it turned out he had the “wrong” ticket, so he couldn’t leave, much to Bren’s delight. (It wasn’t a total waste of time for us. As I sat waiting for the ticketing situation to be resoved, a man with two huge bottles of Power Ade whizzed by me, did an about face and thrust the bottles in my direction. He pleaded with me, “They won’t let me take these on the plane. Take them off my hands for me? Please? Of course I said yes. The bottles are now sitting on my counter at home and haven’t blown up yet, so methinks they’re safe to drink.) After leaving his bags with his step-mom, I took the kids to Chili’s for a late dinner before dropping Erik off home. He called Bren at 12:30 a.m. and they talked for over an hour. They aren’t sleeping much these days.

After Bren’s done tutoring today we’ll head home and take a much needed nap. Bren has class tonight at the college and I am attending a new owner’s class at the dealership where we bought Bren’s car. Rick will be doing school work.

The excitement is overwhelming.

Unrequited Love

April 15th, 2007

It is half past eight on this Sunday morning. Rick is downstairs on the couch reading his economics text book, making mad dashes to the restroom every so often. Food poisoning? We won’t be going to church today. Bren is still in bed and will most likely remain horizontal until noon if I let her. She had a busy day yesterday working on the drama set from 2 – 10 p.m. after having a job interview for a junior counselor position at a summer science camp. The interview went very well, but she didn’t get the job which bummed her out big-time.

Then there’s the guy thing.

The Blogger Is In

March 29th, 2007

I was sweating it there for a minute, not sure if I could even remember my login and password for my blog. I’m so glad Windows kept my stuff in memory.

I can’t believe I have been gone for so long. It was a blogging sabbatical I did not plan…honest. It was torture actually; wanting to write, but being unable to. Writer’s block? No, more like Emotional block. (Have I ever mentioned I have A LOT of baggage? Probably not, but then most of you have known me a long time and are well aware of my character flaws—and that you still love me just baffles me sometimes!)

Life has been good. In the grand scheme of things, our problems are very little; our stressors barely a blip on the radar. We are blessed way beyond what we deserve. On the small scale however, our hearts are grieved over a situation that we created (for the most part) ourselves and caused emotional pain to another person. That’s what tends to happen when a Christian rationalizes acting against God’s clearly revealed word. I’m in danger of permanent brain damage as a result of smacking myself in the head while screaming at myself at the highest possible decible What is WRONG with you!? Thankfully the self-flagellation gave way to deep prayer and repentance, and now we await the grace of the passing of time that will (hopefully) ease the burden of the consequences of our misstep.

Story Time With Alice and Tweedles @ B&NBren has been well. The drama production of Alice is coming up in about a month, so she’s busy with rehersals five days a week, and work calls to work on the set on Saturdays. Along with school work and going out to the University twice a week for her American Sign Language class, she’s one busy chick. In the past month she has gone snowboarding for the first time (she couldn’t move for the two days following, but she said it was worth it), attended the Little Big Town concert, and on Wednesday nights we drag her to a financial class for teens called “No Matter What” that is sponsored by the base chapel. And tonight Bren is being inducted into the National Junior Honor Society.

Bren March ‘07

I am having a difficult time taking global warming very seriously considering that it is March 29th and it was 10-below this morning. I’m not complaining – I love it. We have been warming to the 20’s during the day, and with clear skies, the intense sunlight, and a great view of the mountains….sometimes I just have to stop and take it all in and say, “Wow, God!” We’re supposed to reach the mid-30’s for highs in a few days and I suspect breakup is not far off.

Youth Snowboard Trip March ‘07

I am currently sitting at Barnes&Noble on Bren’s laptop while waiting for the girls to finish their class at UAF. I must get going but wanted to tell you all how much I love you and apologize for neglecting our friendship for the past month. If I figure myself out I’ll let you know.

p.s. I love you, Mary Ann!

Thanks

January 24th, 2007

Dylan, Tammy, Mary Ann, and Gene, thank you all for your input and help. I like this ‘lone tree in the winter’ theme best and will stick to it for the next couple months, I think. When the millionaire stops by I’ll ask him to buy me a custom made blog (them web geeks make some good money for all that work!)

Long Post, Grab A Cuppa Coffee

January 21st, 2007

Click on the scripture references to read the text in NKJV.

Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord, and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding” ~Prov. 2:2-6

I read a lot of books, articles, magazines, blogs, ezines, and sermons. I listen to sermons online and at church. I attend a women’s bible study and receive additional bible teaching at church on Wednesday nights. I have a varied church backgroud having been a member of Assemblies of God, Church of Christ, PCA: Presbyterian Churches of America (Reformed), three Southern Baptist churches, and three Independent Baptist churches, one of which we are currently members of. (Any military family will understand all these moves!). And I completed two semesters of bible college (I had the pleasure of being the first student to receive an F from one of the professors, so I have nothing to boast of here).

Fun And Games

January 15th, 2007

I often wonder how it is that I wake up with a song in my mind when I haven’t heard it in a long time. This happened to me this morning; I woke up singing in my mind the following hymn. What a wonderful way to wake up.

There is a redeemer
Jesus, God’s own Son
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah
Holy One

Jesus my redeemer
Name above all names
Precious Lamb of God, Messiah
Oh for sinners slain

Thank you oh my Father
For giving us Your Son
And leaving Your Spirit
‘Til the work on Earth is done.

When I stand in Glory
I will see His face
And there I’ll serve my King forever
In that Holy Place.

Thank you oh my father,
For giving us Your Son
And leaving Your Spirit
‘Til the work on Earth is done

~ Keith Green

It was peaceful and quiet this morning as we headed for church. It began snowing and still is as I write this at 3:20 a.m.

A Day In The Life…

January 11th, 2007

A proper blog post is somewhere in this brain of mine, but evidently it’s not ready to be born yet because I’ve been sitting here all evening typing and deleting all kinds of nonsense. If after a hundred tries you don’t succeed, stick to the basics. Here’s what happened at our house today:

6:30 – 25-below zero; got up and made Rick oatmeal for breakfast. Watched morning news and a bit of Today. Checked email.

8:00 – Woke up Bren

9:30 – Bren and I attend the first class of a new ladies bible study at the chapel.

11:15 – 15-below zero; Post office to mail packages for mom and dad and sister

Late For New Year

January 3rd, 2007

Normal life has resumed and I’m glad. I can only take so much holiday when that holiday consists of us staying at home. The three of us. Together. For days on end.

The Christmas decorations are down and sitting in a pile on the livingroom floor waiting to be taken home to their boxes where they will remain for the next eleven months. Thanks to a New Year’s Day G.I. Party, the house is looking quite spiffy, and very bare.

What I Wonder

December 13th, 2006

questions.jpg

  • Why I’ve never been selected for jury duty (Maybe staying in one spot for awhile helps)

  • Why live Christmas trees are so expensive in Alaska
  • Why Bren’s laptop will sign on to Instant Messenger, but not the internet
  • Why God didn’t make everyone morning people
  • Why Buddy is still alive given all his medical problems
  • How long it will be until I finally lose weight
  • Why I have let so many friendships grow cold—or die completely
  • If I will ever feel like I’m truly at home anywhere here on Earth
  • Will we get snow on Christmas Day?
  • Where the coal that keeps this place warm and running comes from
  • If my mom, dad, brother, sister, and I will ever be together in one room again
  • Why anyone reads my blog
  • What Rick will do when he retires from active duty
  • How I can get this AIM Triton Active Update pop-up to go away without running the update
  • Why God didn’t allow us to have another baby
  • Why I don’t like domestic duties
  • When my box of new books will arrive
  • Why I am up at 1 a.m. making this stupid list
  • What do YOU wonder?

    Just Keep Reading, Reading…

    December 5th, 2006

There isn’t a Bren in sight. The computer is mine, mine, all mine!

For some reason Bren’s laptop has lost it’s ability to access the internet even though it’s connected to the wireless. I haven’t a clue about these things so I haven’t gotten it fixed yet and Bren has pretty much taken over the home PC. By the time she goes to bed I’m too tired to write, so my blogging has suffered. I suppose I should kick her off for my blogging time each day.

The highlights of the past few days—

    Lowering My Blogging Standards

    November 20th, 2006

    Just for tonight.

My eyes are stinging and begging for sleep, but I feel compelled to write a little about our day. I will not proofread this (to those reading on Bloglines, you’re welcome), so if poor grammar and punctuation and typos bother you, you may want to read no further.

Have I mentioned how cold it is here? I told myself, “Donna, no more blogging about the weather, it’s getting old.” But I can’t help it. Every now and then I just stop and have a moment of disbelief that I’m actually living in a place where 20-below is normal. Normal! Our forcast high tomorrow (Tuesday) is 14-below, and our low, 28-below. As I type this it is 30-below zero.

I’ll be over my disbelief in just a minute. Meanwhile…

    All Better

    November 6th, 2006

I was able to get my blog switched to a new server which seems to have solved all the problems I’ve been having lately. Great thanks to Gene, Josiah, Amy, and the great techs at Total Choice Hosting.

After spending the better part of the afternoon on the computer, I’m feeling a bit guilty over my desire to sit and look through hundreds of blog themes to find some I like, so I’ll have to supress this urge until a later time. Meanwhile, must tend to dinner.

    Happy blogging!

    Blogging in Blue

    November 3rd, 2006

So, wassa matter, don’t like the blue?

Turns out I’m having server problems and things here at the blog went a little wonky on me (that’s the technical term). Once I get those nice folks over at Total Choice Hosting to switch me to a different server, I should be able to upload a different theme for my blog. Until then, plain Jane with a hint of blue will have to do.

Gene and Josiah, love you guys!
